Lombok and Sumbawa are the biggest islands in West Nusa Tenggara Province. There are 36 small islands surround Lombok. So Lombok is one of the world's islands which has the greatest numbers of small islands surround it. Some people say that Lombok's waters has a lot of "pearls" in the ocean. Some of "the pearls " are tourists favorite islands such as: Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, Gili Air, Gili Nanggu, Gili Suda and Gili Kedis. Most of the Gili islands are now without inhabitant such as: Gili Kedis, Gili Tangkong, Gili Poh, Gili Pasaran, Gili Anyaran, etcetera and predicted will be the other tourists favorite islands in upcoming years.

Lombok and those small islands (the Gili islands) surround it, is one of the provinces or states of the countries of the world which have one of the longest coastal lines. Lombok and the Gili islands have plenty of white sandy beaches with pristine water. Lombok and the Gili islands are at the top list of the world's wonder islands for surfing, diving, swimming, snorkeling, fishing, jet skiing, canoeing, banana boating, parasailing, parachuting, kite surfing and other water sports.

Lombok is also one of the world's most well known places of interest of its outdoor adventure (Mount Rinjani Trekking). Lombok's Mount Rinjani Trek, named as One of the Four Best Destinations WorldwideA prestigious 2004 World Legacy Award for Environmental and Social Leader in Tourism was given to The Mount Rinjani Trek Management Board by Conservation International (CI) and National Geographic Traveller Magazine, in a ceremony at The National Geographic Society in Washington DC, USA on 08 June 2004.  A first for Indonesia.
Mount Rinjani (coordinates: 8 degrees 25' 0" S 116 degrees 28' 0" E) is an active strato volcano. It soars 3,726 meters (12,224 ft) above sea level. Mount Rinjani is the 3rd highest mountain in Indonesia, and Mount Rinjani is also the second highest volcano in Indonesia {The highest mountain in Indonesia is Puncak Jaya Wijaya or Puncak Jaya or Jaya Peak or Carstensz Pyramid (Jaya Wijaya Mountains). Carstensz Pyramid is also the highest mountain in Australian Continent and also Carstensz Pyramid is the highest island peak in the world. The second highest mountain in Indonesia is Mount Kerinci (3,805 meters above sea level) in Jambi Province, Sumatera. Mount Kerinci is also the highest volcano in Indonesia}.
Mount Rinjani, attracting thousands of trekkers and climbers annually and the volcano is recognised internationally as one of the most important eco-tourism destinations of the world
MOUNT RINJANI NATIONAL PARK
Mount Rinjani forms the second highest volcanic peak in Indonesia, part of celebrated "Ring of Fire". The dramatic landscape has been created over millions of years of cone-building, violent explosions and erosion. Forested slopes rising directly from the sea create their own weather pattern and act as water collectors for the whole of Lombok. The first historical eruption occured in September 1847. The volcano and its sacred the spectacular lake, are protected by a National Park, established in 1997. The 6 km by 8.5 km oval-shaped caldera is filled partially by a lake, known as Segara Anak Lake. The eruptions in 1994, 1995 and 1996 have formed a small cone in the center of the caldera and lava flows from these eruptions have entered the lake. The highlands are forest clad and mostly under developed. The lowlands are highly cultivated. Rice, soybean, coffee, tobacco, cotton, cinnamon, clove and vanilla fields are the major crops grown on the fertile soils of the island. For Lombok people (Sasaknese and Balinese alike), the volcano is revered as a sacred place and abode of deities. Segara Anak Lake is the destination of thousands of pilgrims who place offerings on the water and bathe away skin diseases at the hot springs. The endemic duct Belibis is found here and a few species of fish are recorded. Over 20 villages surround Mount Rinjani and there are many routes trek up Mount Rinjani. However the most popular entrances: from Senaru village (in North West Lombok) and Sembalun Lawang village (in North East Lombok).
The challenging 3 Days/2 Nights or 4 Days/3 Nights Mount Rinjani Trek Route from Senaru village to the stunning crater rim (Plawangan), down to the stunning crater lake then later on to Sembalun Lawang village, is considered as one of the best treks in South East Asia. A model of eco-tourism in Indonesia, the community based activities are focused on the Mount Rinjani Trek Center in Senaru village, the most popular starting point for the trek. Mount Rinjani Trek Route was developed with the aid of New Zealand Government in 1999. The Mount Rinjani Trek Center embodies under one roof, the unique partnership of Mount Rinjani National Park, Tourism Industry and Local Communities that has been forged to manage and protect Mount Rinjani environment.
